Cultural Shock!

Posted by Cristalia on Oct 16, 2008 in Fun Stuff

We went to eat at Denny’s today. I was the translator because my cousin had the language barrier and the culture shock. Things are pretty difficult for her, I imagine. She also hated the food, but we took her to an American place on purpose because she’ll have to get used to it. Americanized Chinese food is infinitely times worse.

I learned something interesting. Arizona has its own time zone, titled Arizona Standard Time. It’s not subject to Daylight Savings. So in the summer, it’s on Pacific time, and in the winter, it’s on Mountain time as it should be. Must be convenient for them, I thought.

An Old Friend

Posted by Cristalia on Sep 6, 2008 in Fun Stuff

I slept from 9 P.M. to 9 A.M. I guess I was really tired since I got no sleep on the plane. Already there was a lot planned for the day. I got a back, neck, shoulder, and face message, facial, and haircut. It took 4 hours! Much longer than I expected. By the time I got done I was starving. I went to some restaurant and met up with my old best friend from when I was like 10. He’s doing pretty good, but stressed out because of the economy here. Neither of us wanted to talk about real life though. It’s too much to handle.

So what did we end up talking about? The Olympics. He said “Damn, Guo Jingjing looks hotter every time I see her. At first she was just average but now she’s like the hottest woman to me.” Guo is the winner of the synchronized diving 10m and also some solo diving event that I can’t remember. She is really amazing at diving, as good as Michael Phelps at swimming. Very graceful.

Having Fun with the Younger Generation

Posted by Cristalia on Aug 29, 2008 in Fun Stuff

I played cards with my cousin’s son and told him stories about America. He keeps calling me aunt… makes me feel so old, so I told him to just call me by name, but he isn’t used to it. (I know, I know, I don’t like being called either old or young. I’m picky!) He asked me if I had any kids his age, I told him that by the time I have a kid his age, he’d probably be in college and uninterested in playing with kids anymore. My kid would also speak terrible Chinese!

I’m really getting tired of people asking me to teach them English. They ask me how to say so many words, then just forget later after I tell them. What’s the point other than wasting my time? Leave me alone unless you’re serious about learning and will actually remember what I say!
